چکیده
Com puting theresponseofa disordered elasticsystem to an externaldriving force isa long standing problem . Thisisoftheoreticalim portance and also relevantfora host ofexperim entalsystem s,both classicaland quantum .Forclassicalsystem s,typicalexperim entalrealizations are dom ain walls [1,2]and vortex lattice in type IIsuperconductors[3,4]. Pinned quantum crystalsare charge or spin density waves [5],W igner crystalin two dim ensionalelectron gas[6,7]and disordered Luttinger liquids [8]. In the absence ofquantum or therm al uctuationsdisorderleadsto pinning orlocalization.Itwas initiallybelieved thattherm alactivation overbarriersbetween pinned stateswould result[9]in v(F ) F albeit with an exponentially sm allm obility . However, the glassy natureofsuch disordered elasticsystem sleadsinstead to divergentbarriersand to a non linearresponse [10,11]oftheform v = exp( F )known ascreep [3].

Variable-range hopping and quantum creep in one dimension.
We study the quantum nonlinear response to an applied electric field E of a one-dimensional pinned charge-density wave or Luttinger liquid in the presence of disorder. From an explicit construction of low-lying metastable states and of bounce instanton solutions between them, we demonstrate quantum creep v=e(-c/E(1/2)) as well as a sharp crossover at E=E(*) towards a linear response form consis...
متن کاملBose-Glass behaviour in Bi2Sr2Ca1−xYxCu2O8 crystals with columnar defects: experimental evidence for variable-range hopping
We report on vortex transport in Bi2Sr2Ca1−xYxCu2O8 crystals irradiated at different doses of heavy ions. We show evidence of a flux-creep resistivity typical of a variable-range vortex hopping mechanism as predicted by Nelson and Vinokur.
متن کاملLow-temperature magnetic relaxation in HgBa2Ca2Cu3O81d single crystals with columnar defects
Micrometer-sized Hall probes are used to measure the low-temperature magnetic properties of HgBa2Ca2Cu3O81d single crystals with and without columnar defects. Introduction of columnar defects by heavy-ion irradiation suppresses the quasiexponential temperature dependence of the critical current, but only when the density of flux lines is less than the density of defects. The current-dependent c...
متن کاملQuantum creep and variable-range hopping of one-dimensional interacting electrons
The variable range hopping results for noninteracting electrons of Mott and Shklovskii are generalized to one-dimensional disordered charge density waves and Luttinger liquids using an instanton approach. Following a recent paper by Nattermann, Giamarchi, and Le Doussal [Nattermann, Giamarchi, and Le Doussal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 56603 (2003)] we calculate the quantum creep of charges at zero t...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 6 Diffractive energy spreading and its semiclassical limit
We consider driven systems where the driving induces jumps in energy space: (1) particles pulsed by a step potential; (2) particles in a box with a moving wall; (3) particles in a ring driven by an electro-motive-force. In all these cases the route towards quantum-classical correspondence is highly non-trivial. Some insight is gained by observing that the dynamics in energy space, where n is th...
